Most of you may have been aware about several diseases that can transmit from one to another through sexual interaction. Some of these are life threatening like HIV Aids and some can cause long term damage to you, if left without treating in the first phase of its occurrence. We have discussed about one of the common sexually transmitted diseases called Syphilis.

What is Syphilis?

It’s a disease caused by bacterial infection (spirochete bacterium) which can cause severe harm to you during its later stage.

How it gets infected:

During your sexual intercourse if you are unaware about your partners Syphilis infection, it can easily pass to you. Sometime it may pass from one to another person through close body contact. During pregnancy mother can spread the disease to baby.

What are the symptoms?

Syphilis can occur in three stages and it can remain dormant in your body for years and prompts serious damage if not treated. During primary stage a small painless sore appears at the infected spot within three weeks or later. In the secondary stage it becomes a rash that eventually covers your entire body and palms of the hands even the soles of the feet also. If you don’t take proper treatment it can move to hide or latent stage where it may remain dormant for years without any symptoms.

What if you don’t take proper treatment?

During the primary or secondary stage you should never ignore it. It can be cured with proper medication during this stage. But if left without, it may develop severe complications during the later stage, causing damages in brain, heart, nerves, eyes, liver, bones and blood vessels.

If you are pregnant:

If you can detect the early symptoms of Syphilis and treat forthwith, you and your baby will most likely be fine. But not treating can raise the chances of infecting your baby. The effect could be even more dangerous like losing your baby in miscarriage, stillbirth or soon after birth, or other severe neurological problem.

Precaution:

  • Stay away from unprotected sex.
  • Get treatment in the initial period.
